Agriculture is the backbone of the economy which contributes about 33% of
the GDP and about 70% of the population depend on it for livelihood.GNP and GDP:
The nominal GDP at market is estimated at Nu. 29,086 million and a per capita GDP
estimated at Nu. 40,598, equivalent to US$ 835. The GNP per-capita is Nu. 35,954
(US$740). Agriculture (or RNR sector: agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry)
dominates with 33.2% of the GDP, despite is declining share. Its real growth was
22.6%. Mining sector recorded 12.8% growth rate, contributing only 1.8% to GDP.
Manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP was 7.2% and it recorded 0.4% growth.
The hydro-power contribution was 10.8%, while construction sector’s contribution
increased to 10.8%. Services sector contribution stands at 21.7% to GDP.
