News in Detail:     Learning on vacation
Mendrelgang Middle Secondary School 9 July, 2010 - For the past six years, Kinley Penjor, 13, from Mendrelgang, Tsirang, spent his mid-term break helping his parents transplant paddy seedlings and look after the family ox.

But this year, the class VI student of Mendrelgang primary school learned how to provide first aid during emergencies, to cope when disaster strikes, made slippers out of plastic bottles and also learned driglam namzha (traditional etiquette).

“I learnt a lot,” he said.

Kinley was among the 111 scout members from nine schools in the dzongkhag, who gathered in Mendrelgang MSS to attend the dzongkhag level scout camp from July 3 to 7.

For Gangaram Chhetri, 11, of Gosaling community primary school, the summer camp provided him an opportunity to learn to dance. “I’m interested in dancing and I learnt it every evening during the cultural program session,” he said.

According to the coordinator, Tashi Wangchuk, the scout camp is expected to provide a good learning experience for all scouts, as they will have opportunity to interact with members from various schools.

Tsirang district education officer, Sonam Gyeltshen, told the scouts at the closing ceremony that he was proud of them. “Most children don’t know what to do during the break, but this group of students made use of their break productively,” he said.

For Kunzang Wangmo, 13, of Phuentenchu primary school, who travelled out of her village for the first time, the camp exposed her to town life. “I want to encourage a lot of my friends to join scouts to experience being in large groups,” she said.

Members of the four sub-camps, Jigme, Khesar, Namgay and Wangchuck, exhibited their work, artificial flowers made of bottle lids and matchsticks, temporary suspension bridges, rope ladder, and makeshift huts on July 7.

Aimed to provide opportunity for scouts to experience outdoor camps, Tsirang is one of the four dzongkhags to organise and conduct dzongkhag level scout camp during this summer break, with financial support from Bhutan scouts association and Danish scouts and guide association (DDS) partnership program.
