June 5: Bhutan has the highest per capita fuel wood consumption in Asia. To help cut down firewood consumption Bumthang Fabrication works has come out with heavy duty cooking stoves that can be operated either by electricity or LPG Gas.
The heavy duty cooking stoves produced by the Bumthang Fabrication Works. There are two kinds -one that can be operated using electricity and another that can be operated using LPG gas.
The cooking stoves operate exactly like the rice cooker that we have at home.
Pema Wangchuk, the proprietor of Bumthang Fabrication Works said the stove is suitable for mass cooking like in schools, dratshangs, colleges and hospitals.
He said using electricity operated cooking gas is very cheap compared to traditional stoves which use fire wood. He said firewood worth Nu. 35,000 is consumed in a month to cook 84 kilograms of rice a day. Cooking the same amount of rice using the electric cooker, it will cost only Nu. 3,600 in a month.
He said the stoves are environment friendly and will help reduce firewood consumption.
A man who is using the LPG gas operated cooker said it is more convenient compared to firewood fed stoves.
